ASHRAE NYC Chapter - September 2026 Print

President's Message

Dear ASHRAE NYC Members, Friends, and Volunteers,

Welcome back after the summer break. I hope everyone had a chance to rest, recharge, and enjoy some time with family and friends.

The ASHRAE New York City Chapter has fully transitioned into the new Society Year, and I am very pleased to welcome the many new volunteers who have stepped forward to support our Chapter. We have an exceptionally strong team this year, and I am excited about what we will be able to accomplish together as we celebrate 115 years of ASHRAE New York City.

We are starting the year with great momentum. Last month, our volunteers organized several wonderful community events, including the ASHRAE NYC Bike Ride and the Women in ASHRAE picnic. Thank you to everyone who helped make these events possible. They are a great reminder that our Chapter is not only about technical programs and professional development, but also about friendship, belonging, and the volunteers who make this community feel like one big family.

Climate Week is also here, and we have many more programs, networking opportunities, technical events, and community initiatives in the works for the months ahead.

Most importantly, this Chapter begins with you. Your involvement, ideas, and feedback are extremely important to us. If there is anything you believe we can improve, whether it relates to events, communications, committees, membership, or any other area of Chapter operations, please feel free to contact me directly at [email protected]. I am always happy to hear from you.

Thank you to everyone who has volunteered, participated, shared feedback, and stayed connected. There is a great deal of energy throughout ASHRAE New York City right now, and I look forward to a productive, meaningful, and exciting year together.

With gratitude,

Lukasz A. Semla
President, 2026–2027 Society Year

President's Report

The ASHRAE New York City Chapter has fully transitioned into the 2026–2027 Society Year, and we are beginning the year with strong energy across our committees and volunteer teams.

Our September Chapter Dinner Meeting will take place on September 30 at Club 101, and we are honored to welcome Bill McQuade, who served as ASHRAE Society President during the 2025–2026 Society Year, as our special guest and speaker. Registration is now open, and tickets are available through our website.

Ahead of the dinner meeting, we will also be engaging with government officials to discuss how our industry and community can help prevent future Legionnaires’ disease outbreaks in our region. This is an important issue for New York City, and we look forward to contributing our technical knowledge and expertise to the conversation.

Behind the scenes, we have been working to strengthen how the Chapter operates and communicates. Most of our committees now have dedicated @ashraeny.org email addresses, making it easier for members to connect directly with the right team. These addresses can be found in the Contact Us section of this newsletter and on our partially updated website.

Our Marketing Committee has also grown, and the team will be working on modernizing our website, expanding our social media presence, and improving how we communicate with members and the broader community.

We have completed the transition of our LinkedIn presence from a personal profile to an official organizational page, giving members and followers a better way to connect and interact with the Chapter. In addition, our newsletter database has been refreshed and inactive email addresses have been removed. To make sure you continue receiving Chapter communications, please remember to keep the email address in your profile at ashrae.org up to date. Whenever possible, consider including a personal email address, especially if your company email may change when you move to a new position.

More initiatives are in the works, and we look forward to sharing additional updates throughout the year. Thank you for your ongoing support!

Register here for the September 30, 2026 Chapter Dinner Meeting:

https://ashraeny.org/meetinginfo.php?id=327

Our chapter is pleased to welcome ASHRAE Presidential Member and Past President Bill McQuade for a timely program examining the relationship between building systems, water quality, and occupant health. With recent Legionnaires’ disease cases and outbreaks highlighting the importance of effective water management, this program will bring together perspectives from building engineering, water system science, and public health.

Mr. McQuade will discuss the critical connections between source water, municipal distribution systems, building plumbing, HVAC equipment, and occupant practices, along with practical measures building owners and operators can consider to manage risk. David Bowcock will explore the ecology and movement of Legionella through water systems, including the role of municipal water infrastructure and events that can affect conditions within buildings.

The program will also feature Mr. Cline of the Alliance to Prevent Legionnaires’ Disease, who will discuss recent NYC water testing, observations from the 2026 outbreak, and the organization’s “Source-to-Tap” approach to prevention. The speakers will highlight current practices in water management, testing, monitoring, and staff training, as well as relevant ASHRAE standards and guidelines.

This program offers an opportunity for engineers, building owners and operators, facility professionals, public-sector representatives, and others interested in building health and water safety to gain a broader understanding of the issues and approaches shaping Legionella risk management today.

We look forward to seeing you at Club 101! Register here:

Volunteers of the Month

This month, we are pleased to recognize Nicole West and Tristan Hidalgo for their time, energy, and commitment to the ASHRAE New York City Chapter.

Nicole is spearheading our new Sports Events Committee and recently organized the ASHRAE NYC Bike Ride during the DOT Open Streets Event. She is also actively involved with Women in ASHRAE and has been helping several other committees across the Chapter. Her next idea is to launch an ASHRAE NYC Run Club, creating another opportunity for our members to connect outside of our traditional programs and events. If you are interested in joining the Run Club or helping organize future sports and community events, please reach out to Nicole here: https://ashraeny.org/sports.

Tristan is co-chairing our Programs Committee and has been working behind the scenes to bring engaging speakers, topics, and strong technical programming to our members. He has had his hands full coordinating our September Chapter Dinner Meeting, working through the many details required to bring the event together and create a valuable experience for attendees. He is also involved with several other committees across the Chapter. Stop by our September Chapter Meeting on September 30th and say hi to Tristan and other volunteers: https://ashraeny.org/meetinginfo.php?id=327

Both volunteers are great examples of how much can be accomplished when members step forward, share their ideas, and contribute their time. Thank you, Nicole, Tristan and all of our volunteers for helping make our Chapter stronger and our community more connected.
